Nowadays Europe faces the problem of rural depopulation as a combined effect of demographic and climate problems. Towards a sustainable regeneration of the European rural area, agricultural production could be a promising alternative for young population, despite the hurdles imposed by political decisions and economical policies. This study focuses on six specific European countries (namely Italy, Greece, Slovenia, Germany, Romania and Spain) by discussing the limitations and the opportunities encountered there, as well as the necessary policy improvements to increase the sustainability of these areas. The latter could be tailored to enforcing cooperations, insert digital and smart agriculture as primary achievement, eliminating the environmental impact of the whole agri-production supply chain and invest on training the new-comers upon the state-of-the-art farming practices. Finally, this work also underlines the significance of building strong conscience of decentralized young population that they are key players for rural development, especially when organized in communities.
